Color Run 2014

Color Run 2014

Fans of the new fun-running craze will have a spectacular event on their doorstep in 2014, when The Color Run presented by Dulux comes to Sunderland.

Color Run - Brighton

Dubbed ‘The happiest 5k on the planet’, The Color Run is not timed, meaning groups of friends can walk, jog, dance and party their way along the course at any pace. At each kilometre, colour explosions cover runners in kaleidoscopic fashion before DJs entertain the crowd in the Colour Festival Area after the finish line.

This year’s event takes place on Sunday 20th July at 11am and runners of all shapes, sizes, ages and speeds are invited to take part. The exact route will be announced in the coming weeks.

Registration is now open at www.TheColorRun.co.uk at £25 for individuals and £23 p/person for group bookings (There is a £4.99 cost for postage and packaging of entry pack).

To mark the launch, Jojo from Capital FM’s Breakfast Show and Drivetime presenter Rob Howard will be at The Bridges meeting members of the public this Friday between noon and 1pm. The pair will be giving people the opportunity to cover them in the colour powder that will be used during the main event!

Ann Marie O’Riordan, Head of Marketing, UK & Ireland for presenting sponsor Dulux said: “We feel passionately about the positive change colour can bring to our lives and the places in which we live.

“We’re delighted to be presenting The Color Run in the UK for the second year – one of the many ways that we’re bringing to life our mission to add colour to people’s lives. We are looking we look forward to spreading the joy of colour at the events throughout the year.”

Event organiser Joe Rafferty said: “We hosted four UK events last year and the feedback was incredible, so it was an easy decision to increase The Color Run programme for 2014.

“Our main aim is to help people have fun whilst they exercise. It’s a great event for people who’ve not taken part in organised runs before, as you can go at any pace with a big group of friends.

“As well as the run, the Colour Festival Area at the finish line is an amazing place to hang out, listen to music and get colourful!

Chris Alexander, Chief Operating Officer of Sunderland Live, added: “We’re delighted to be involved in bringing such a brilliant event to the region for the first time on July 20th. With the amount of fantastic publicity already, we’re really looking forward to what promises to be an amazing day for the city.”

The Color Run has its origins in the ancient Hindu Holi Festival – often known as both the festival of love and the festival of colour. More than 170 events are now organised by The Color Run each year across the world.

FAQ

How much does it cost?
If you are entering The Color Run™ as a team, it is £23.00 (per person) + £4.99 for postage and packing of your race pack. If you’re entering as a solo runner or walker, it is £25.00 + £4.99 for race pack postage and packaging.

How does a team work compared with a solo runner?
Pretty simple, you register as a (4 minimum/infinity max) unit rather than as an individual. You get to pick a groovy custom team name, anything from The Roy G Biv All-stars to We Sweat Rainbows. You then get to run/walk together and “help” each other get really coloured up over the 5 color kilometers. There is no “relay” component and team members can finish together as a unit or separately.

Do I need to be some sweet ole’ runner to do this?
Oh my goodness, NO. There are plenty of other great 5ks out there to test speed and performance. This Color Run™ event is all about a color crazy day with friends and family. You can run, walk, crawl, or cartwheel if you wish!

What is included with my The Color Run™ registration?
Runners will receive a custom The Color Run™ race shirt and tattoo, race number, and a “Color Runner™” finisher sweat band. These race packets will be posted to you! You will also receive a pack of colour at the finish line!

What is the inspiration behind The Color Run™?
The Color Run 5k is the first colour race of its kind and was inspired by several awesome events, including Disney’s World of Color, Mud Runs, and Festivals throughout the world such as Holi.  We wanted to create a less stressful and untimed running environment that is more about health and happiness!

Can I run with a jogging pushchair and my kids?
On one condition…if you are prepared to be one of the hippest mams/dads on the planet!  As long as they are cute and like to have fun… all kiddos 5 and under can run with an adult FREE of charge and do not need to register!

Can I run with my dog?
NO DOGS are allowed - sorry!

Is there an age limit for younger runners?
No age limits if they can cover (running, jogging, walking, strolling) the 3 miles of The Color Run™ course, they can absolutely do The Color Run™ 5k! Remember though, as soon as they turn 6 they will need to register and have a race vest!

How strict is the “white clothing dress code” for the start of the event?
We will have white clothing police inspectors located throughout the event.  You will be arrested and put in The Color Run™ jail if more than 11.8% of your clothing is a hue other than white.

Were you kidding about the question above?
Yes we were.  As long as runners wear shirts that are mostly white, you are totally good.  They can include team logos and any other image you see fit. To the point, it is really just more fun to run starting in white and ending, well… COLOURIFFIC!

How is the color administered?  Will I be hurt, maimed, or killed?
Ha ha ha we love this one.  No, it doesn’t hurt at all.  It is like getting into a powdered sugar food fight!

Are you sure??? Teenagers with paint ball guns are not involved at any point?
Yes. We are 100% sure.

Will the colour ruin clothes or running shoes?
The “colour” does mostly wash out after the event.  As with anything dirty, the sooner you wash it the better. We suggest wearing items that you wouldn’t mind getting colourful. If you would like to preserve the colour in your running shirt, spray it with vinegar and iron it.  If you wash your shirt, the colour will eventually come out.

Do the kilometer “Colour Zones” affect runner vision? Or breathing?
The Color Run™ explosions are basically food grade cornstarch and are 100% natural and SAFE.  As with any substance, you want to keep it out of your eyes and our “certified” colour throwers make sure to aim low as you pass by.  Some runners opt to wear glasses or goggles for their eyes and use a bandana or dust mask for their mouths.

Do you have “cleaning stations” at the finish after party?
We have air blown colour cleaning at the finish line. With a good dusting off, you aren’t 100% clean, but you are totally good for the drive home.  It is actually pretty fun to see people still colored up around town after The Color Run™ event.  It is like a badge of honour!

How does the colour affect the inside of cars?
Most people bring some towels for the insides of their cars, just in case. It’s like driving home from the swimming pool in your swimsuit

Can spectators attend the post-race The Color Run™ party?
Absolutely.  We will have The Color Run™ powder packets available first come/first serve for everyone to purchase.  You may want to warn them though… they ain’t coming out of The Color Run™ party clean!

Are cameras and phones safe to have in the colour zones?
Our race photographers are totally fine shooting from a medium distance (25-50 feet).  If you want to get shots right in the midst of the colour we recommend covering cameras/phones with cling film or a suitable plastic wrap.

Is The Color Run™ timed?
The Color Run™ 5k is not a timed event.  Runners tend to take their sweet time out there and we realised no one really cares about their speed. We suggest self-timing for anyone desiring a finish time.

How do the post-race colour throws work?
At the Finish Festival, the crowd will do a colour throw every 15 minutes to welcome new runners coming in.  We provide one bag of colour in your race bag and more can be purchased at check-in or the finish if desired.

Why ‘Color’ and not ‘Colour’?
The Color Run™ is an American trademark and we have to play by their rules when we refer to it! You know how it is potato – patata, tomato – tamata!
